Travelling to Luxembourg:

From France:

Travelling to Luxembourg from France has become a lot easier since the opening of the TGV connection Paris-Luxembourg. Travel time from Paris Est is only two hours. Participants coming from Metz or Nancy can also choose to take the TER, which takes 50 and 90 minutes, respectively.

From the Netherlands:

For participants coming from the Netherlands, one of the easiest ways to reach Luxembourg is by train. Those coming from the West of the Netherlands may prefer the connection by means of Brussels, which goes every hour. Those coming from the East of the Netherlands may prefer the connection by means of Maastricht and Liège ("Luik"), which goes only once every two hours, but follows a very scenic route.

Return tickets Luxembourg can be bought at the standard NS vending machines (click on "To Belgium / Luxembourg / France" at the start menu). When buying tickets, one has to specify whether to travel by means of Roosendaal and Brussels or by means of Maastricht and Liège, so please check at the international trainplanner which connection is most convenient. One also has to select a "starting date" of the ticket. Both the forward and return trip have to take place within one month of this starting date, to the ticket is not bound to a particular time or date. It is also possible to buy the ticket at the domestic (!) counter, which will charge a € 3,50 booking fee.

One could save an hour of travel time by taking the Thalys between Amsterdam and Brussels, instead of the regular intercity, but this requires a special (and more expensive) ticket that is not available from the standard NS vending machine. Furthermore, the ticket can only be used in the trains it is booked for, allowing no flexibility at all (unless one is again willing to pay a heavy additional fee). Travellers might choose to take the regular intercity train instead.

Participants travelling on a really tight budget can also come by coach. Eurolines Netherlands offers return tickets starting from € 28, to those that book early.

From Austria:

Participants coming from places that are too far to conveniently reach Luxembourg by train could choose

to travel by airplane instead. The following regional airports can be recommended.

  • Lux Airport. By far the most convenient way of air travelling to Luxembourg is to arrive at the national

airport. The airport has recently been reconstructed and the shiningly new terminal indeed looks very

appealing. Some of the advantages of Lux Airport are its relatively small size and fast and efficient procedures (one has to be at the airport only one hour before departure). Only a limited number of airlines fly to Luxembourg, including CityJet. The national

carrier LuxAir is also a very decent option. From the airport, it's only 20 minutes to the city centre by bus.

A good choice is to take bus 16 which stops nearby all hotels mentioned later on this web page

(€ 1.50 one-way). For hotel Français, Molitor or Alpha, it would also be possible to take bus 9.

Our experience is that a taxi from the airport to the city centre can easily cost € 35.

  • Frankfurt Hahn. Several budget airlines fly to this German regional airport, that is 1 hour and 50 minutes

away from Luxembourg by shuttle bus. Expect to pay about € 30 for a bus return ticket

Frankfurt Hahn - Luxembourg. This is one of the favourite options of the staff

at the University of Luxembourg.

Local Transport:

The bus network in Luxembourg is well distributed and efficient. There are various bus lines between the city centre and the meeting site. These bus lines are indicated by the sign "EUROBUS" (they also stop at the EU institutions). From the city centre, take any EUROBUS (like line 1, 16, 125 and 194) to Kirchberg. The meeting site is located at bus stop "Coudenhove-Kalergi" (this is the first stop after "Kirchberg, Erasme/d'Coque").

Bus tickets come in two forms:

Both one-way tickets and day cards are available on the bus itself (€ 1,50 and € 4, respectively). It is also possible to buy a carnet of 10 one-way tickets (€ 12) or 5 daycards (€ 16) at newspaper stands (like for instance at the airport or railway station). Tickets bought in advance (carnet) need to be stamped in the bus. Many of the city buses have stamping machines; if your bus does not, then ask the driver to simply write the time and date on your ticket.

Paper tickets are gradually phased out in favour of electronic tickets, which are stored on an E-GO card. The card itself is for free; one only pays for the tickets that are loaded on it. When entering the bus, just hold the E-GO card to the card reader until it says "bon voyage". Unlike many other places in the world, this only needs to be done when entering the bus (and not when leaving the bus).

When planning to go by public transport, one can use the online travel planner, which covers the entire country.

Another interesting local transport alternative is to move around by bicycle. The City of Luxembourg has several fully automated bicycle rental stations, including one that is nearby the meeting site. A subscription for one week costs only € 1. The idea is take a bicycle from one rental station and return it to perhaps another. If the trip takes less than 30 minutes, it's for free. Otherwise one starts to pay € 1 euro per hour, after the first 30 minutes, with a maximum of € 5 per day. Please keep in mind that you're allowed to keep your rented bicycle for at most 24 hours.

Although the city centre itself is small enough to navigate by foot, we do not recommand walking as a way to reach the meeting site, unless your hotel is located in Kirchberg.

Maps of the city of Luxembourg are available at pretty much every newspaper stand. Free maps, covering only the city centre and Kirchberg, are available at the Luxembourg City Tourist Office.

When arriving by train, one could take a taxi to the hotel (when leaving the station hall, the taxi stand is on the left). Alternatively, one could take the bus, since the EUROBUS bus stop is right in front of the station hall (don't cross the street). If the hotel is in the Gare area (which is the name of the neighbourhood in front of the station) it's also possible to walk.
